Cognos is a market leader in business intelligence (BI) software. Their BI products, Improptu and Powerplay are selling at a brisk pace. Their application development (ADT) business, once their main bread-and-butter, is declining at over 14% rate. Despite that over 100% growth in BI product sales is helping them realize over 25% growth in revenue and about 100% growth in net. Recent strategic partnerships with Peoplesoft, Informix, HBO & Company, IBM and many others should help them increase their sales even more.

Their main competetor, Business Objects (BOBJY), was high flyer and recently came down to earth - to under 20 from 55. At the same time, Cognos showed the steadiness of a mature consumer product company. In July 96's selloff Cognos traded in the 18.5 - 23 range!

The stock is up over 250% in the last 18 months. The company's current business is in sound shape to justfy current stock price of 22 (though it appears expensive.) Since the results from many of these alliances haven't yet hit the bottom-line, I think Cognos has good upside potential.

All comments on this will be appreciated.

Good luck to all!
