I think, Christopher, that there is a tendency for politicians of all kinds to be more eager to invoke moral principles when they have the luxury of not having to put them to work. Liberals when out of power talk about human rights abuses; conservatives, freedom from communism. Both become pragmatists when they have power. And frankly that's probably not a bad thing.
