This whole thing is starting to tick me off. A quote from a news story today:

"The first thing people see on the Web will dictate their experience," said Roper, whose concern is that Excite AtHome will win the lion's share of new consumers accessing the Web.

ALL PEOPLE WANT IS THE FAST PIPE! THEY DON'T WANT TO BE TOLD WHAT TO LOOK AT.

1. Anyone who doesn't know how to set his or her browser to start up with either a blank page or a user-specified site is probably too ignorant to get much out of the Internet anyway.

2. AOL's user interface is clunky and ugly. The entire purpose of the World Wide Web is totally obfuscated by layers of cheesy graphics and proprietary screens.

AOL wants open access only so they stand a better chance of duping another couple million users into thinking that "AOL" and "Internet" are synonymous.

PS I use TCI@Home cable modem service, and I had no problem at all setting it to start with a page other than that containing the @Home content. I hope Kennard and his homies come in and give AOL a good swift kick in the chops.
