The "clasically liberal" among us had no qualms about setting that contempt aside when it was expedient - in the very short term - for them to do so. Subsidizing feudalism in developing countries, which was the net result of the Kirkpatrick doctrine, helped our enemies more than it helped us, and exacerbated problems that are still threatening to rock our boat today. How much of the unpayable debt owed by developing countries was originally a subsidy paid to feudal lords who convinced us that they were our allies against the commie menace?
