My friend still lives off solar power, but also has propane to run the refrigerator and stove, and a wood stove for heat.

If you believe for example, that we could go to the moon in 1969, but yet cannot develop efficient solar technology in 1999, have I got a nice freshly painted bridge to sell you! <G>
Part of the problem is the relatively small amounts of money spent on solar research compared for example, with the huge inflation adjusted amounts spent on developing the nuclear bomb and generating facilities. Another part of the problem is the lack of willpower on the part of the people to develop clean and completely safe energy resources.
Yes, it still takes a fairly large amount of solar panels to run a full sized home, but that is offset somewhat by tax credits in some areas, and the ability to sell your own excess power back to the utility company in others.
