For centuries past, China had made several attempts to attack the Japanese islands with the intent to conquer. In one case, only the Kamikaze( divine winds) prevented the attack from succeeding. I am against atrocities of any kind and the bushido code was brutal but, the Japanese had a vengance when they brutalized the Chinese. Nobody in their right mind has ever called the Samurai, gentle, including me. The embargo of oil, ore, and scrap metal crippled the modernization effort of the Japanese and was much more than a mild economic impact. I don't condone most of what the Japanese did but still feel that they were provoked. TD

Thanks chalu2, there is a book on Nanking at Amazon that I have been planning to read. Another interesting subject of that time period is the last emporer of China (forgot his name) and his association with the Japanese. There was that movie "The Last Emporer" that dealt with him, and they presented him as a sort of patsy to the Japanese, selling out his people and all.. I'm not sure how accurate that is.
