Dear rhansen;
A number of short positions I've entered are of the non-marginable type and I've entered short positions on sub $5/share stocks (which on Datek are non-marginable or in otherwords require a 100% maintence requirement). Most recently is GKI that I've shorted many times(AMEX that's halted and I think they're folding).
I'm not sure of Datek's criteria for non-marginable, as I can't determine rhyme or reason from my observations. As you know they have a list of volitale I-nuts that are 50% and they have the 50% or $5/share rule (need the greater of the two) on stocks that trade from $5-16/share in addition to rule for the sub $5 stocks ($2.5 or 100% whichever is greater).
The only stocks you can't short on Datek ar those labled NS (four stocks that I follow on Datek that are NS happen to be marginable, however one is on the 50% list and the other 3 are sub $16 putting them into the "special" rule catagory).
Apart from certian stocks that I play short that aren't available on Datek (that I can always get from my full service brokers) I like Datek. Oh I should qualify and exclude the opening 30 min when the market is seeing fast action, Datek can be/has been a pain at those times.
Best Regards,
Mad2
