THE TOP NEWS TODAY[1] GLOBALSTAR EYES COMMERCIAL START-UP
Globalstar L.P. [GSTRF] is beginning its countdown to
commercial service after yesterday (7/25) completing its initial
32-bird constellation. A Boeing Co. [BA] Delta II rocket lifted
from Cape Canaveral Air Station, Fla., at 3:46 a.m. EDT, to
place four Globalstar satellites into orbit. That mission
brought the total number of Globalstar birds to 32 - sufficient
for a phased rollout of the global mobile satellite phonenetwork.
Globalstar now intends to launch commercial service in late-
September. It is scheduled to launch another 20 satellites
through the remainder of this year to round out its
constellation. Those additional birds will increase the
system's capacity and coverage.
"Further launches will enhance our system, but for now we
can move forward with confidence toward initiation of service as
scheduled this autumn," said Bernard Schwartz, chairman and of the system has been very
successful, and our service provider
partners are stepping up their plans for regional introduction
of service," Schwartz said. (Jeanette Clonan, Globalstar,212/338-5658.)CEOof Globalstar.
If the experience of industry pioneer Iridium LLC [IRID] is
anything to go by, the distribution of Globalstar equipment and
services will be paramount to the company's success. "Testing

Iridium Investors to Be Included in Restructuring (Update1) (Adds CFO's comments in 5th
through 8th paragraphs.)
Washington, July 26 (Bloomberg) -- Iridium LLC investors can expect to receive some
compensation
under the debt-laden global satellite-telephone company's restructuring plan,
Chief Financial Officer Leo Mondale said.

Progress is being made in the company's effort to reach an out-of-court restructuring,
Mondale said, although bankruptcy is still a possibility.
He wouldn't be more specific as to
when a restructuring plan would be announced, or what type of compensation investors
would receive.

Washington-based Iridium last month received its third extension until Aug. 11 from banks to
meet conditions on $800 million in loans. It also has until Aug. 15 to make a payment of $90
million in interest on its $1.45 billion in bonds. ''This would be not one of the restructurings
in which we left equity holders high and dry,'' Mondale said. ''The restructuring we are
advancing will not result in the equity holders being reduced to zero by any stretch.''

Iridium needs about 90 percent of its bondholders to approve an out-of-court restructuring,
Mondale said. ''I can't rule out bankruptcy until we have got a successful out-of-court
restructuring, which is what we are trying to get,'' he said.

Iridium's price cuts, which went into effect this month, is luring new customers, Mondale
said. Iridium announced the price cuts last month to try to new gain subscribers as demand
fell. ''We have seen a marked improvement in our net daily additions since the new prices
for handsets and service have made it into the market,'' Mondale said.

ENTEL Given Authority to Operate ICO Ground Station in Chile to Support ICO Satellite Control

Business Wire - July 26, 1999 13:16

SANTIAGO, Chile--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 26, 1999--ICO Global
Communications, the global mobile communications company, today announced that
ENTEL (Chile) has received a full frequency spectrum license to operate ICO's
Satellite Access Note (SAN) at Longovilo.

This will enable ENTEL to provide feeder links, andas well as telemetry, tracking and
control (TT&C) functions, in the 5/7 GHz bands from the Chile SAN, one of six of
ICO's ground stations that have a TT&C facility.

Chile's Minister of Transport and Telecommunications issued the license under the
terms of the supreme decree N. 151 dated March 26, 1999 and approved by the
Contraloria General de la Republica on June 16, 1999.

The authorization marks a major regulatory milestone for ICO in the development of its
ground network, with ICO's first satellite scheduled for launch later this year. The
Chilean approval allows ENTEL to provide support essential for in-orbit control of the
ICO satellite constellation, as well as full connectivity of the ICO satellite system to the
terrestrial public telecommunication networks (PSTNs).

The other five TT&C SAN sites are in the United States (Brewster, Washington),
South Africa, Germany, Australia and India, and an additional four ICO SANs are
near completion elsewhere. The Longovilo SAN in Chile is a fundamental element of
ICO's Latin American strategy. It also plays an important role in ICO's system as a
whole, by providing coverage in Southeast Pacific and South America, the Southeast
Pacific and South Atlantic oceans.

ICO Chief Executive Officer Richard Greco said: "This is a significant step forward for
us in the important South American market. We have more challenges ahead, but our
team of partners and investors will prove to be up to the task. We are particularly
grateful to ENTEL for its efforts in gaining this license on behalf of ICO."

Richard Buchi, Chief Executive Officer of Entel, said: "We are very pleased to have
been granted this final license for the ICO SAN site at Longovilo. We will continue to
show our commitment to the ICO system in the future by ensuring full compliance with
the operational objectives at the SAN site, with the aim of contributing to the success
of ICO's mobile satellite services."

The Longovilo SAN will use frequencies at 5178-5182 MHz and 5242-5246 MHz
for Earth-to-space TT&C transmission, and 7010.6-7013.1 MHz and 7071.6-7074.4
for space-to-Earth TT&C transmission.
