I agree with your assessment. A better choice of words would have been NAS approach vs. SAN approach as you stated so succinctly.

It is my impression that NTAP offers customers an attractive and affordable entry into NAS.

I like NTAP and EMC. The advantage they have in the market (IMO) is software wrapped around the storage media.
