And how about SUNW? What happens when they get some competition for their
high end servers? Next year, IA64?

Ummm, Sun has 64-bit Solaris signed on with Intel for IA64 (Solaris 8 by then), Tony. Even tuned, it will still be a less scalable solution that Solaris on UltraSparc, but will be a natural fit for the IA64 market.

The two companies are on the same page there.

Besides, maybe it'll help Sun somewhat with the *increasing backlog of getting their boxes out the door to meet demand <g>. It's much easier to get arranged electrons out the door.

'Scalable' isn't just a sales pitch, it's a demand trend in the server space. IA64 should help Intel quite a bit in that space, but as well, Sun will be into a new hardware cycle around the same time. The market doesn't seem to be worried about it anymore, in any case.

IA-64 isnt competition for Ultrasparc Tony. IA-64 is Dead in the water, stillborn and its biggest problem is that no one cares anymore. Pentium III will be a better performer than IA-64 by the time it becomes available.
