I don't think that is true.
MSFT has stepped back from streaming and is dealing directly with Real (perhaps for the time being, but I don't think MSFT will try to undercut them...too many legal hassles).
MSFT is hamstrung on many fronts right now. Gates is resorting to the old IBM FUD tactics, as a last resort, and it isn't likely to be effective.
Gates is very interested in general media at the moment, and isn't overly concerned w/the Internet. That said, he isn't ignoring the Internet, either. But he really does believe that convergence will occur from the TV side as opposed to the computer side.
I disagree. I think that the home computer is reaching a point where it is beginning to dominate people's time. Look at AOL's usage figures. All homes that have AOL have shown declines in TV viewership at a rapidly increasing pace.
I don't think people want more functionality out of their TV's (settop boxes), but rather want to wire their computer to their TV and have functionality delivered to them. Set top boxes already exist, in a sense, on everyone's computer.
AAPL is very well situated w/hard and software to take advantage of this.
