That's the big irony... you could drown a rat in the ink that has been spilled in hyping CDMA mobile operators and Nextel subscriber growth in USA. But this quarter's biggest growth surprise came from virtually ignored Voicestream. The 180% boost in year-on year subscriber numbers is pretty staggering considering that the new GSM-1900 mobile handsets are arriving only this fall. Especially the regional Baby Bell mobile divisions are performing like garden slugs compared to Voicestream.

The real advantages of Voicestream/Omnipoint merger are still around the corner. It's very gratifying to see that Motorola's new worldphone for Voicestream also offers WAP and internet capability. That's a good hook considering it's an extra to the global roaming capability the handset offers. Meanwhile, the Voicestream rivals' time schedule of actually offering nationwide phone-to-phone messaging and advanced data features seems to be slipping once again.
