Lynn, I want to post 2 very good emails that I particularly liked from the CF members regarding the suggestion you made...You, Gary, and Jorjenzak REALLY have my wheels turning. It's so funny that you started this, because, as you may or may not recall, I was talking about writing the WSJ on writing an article regarding an analysis on the market. Your whole suggestions was one thing that I want to talk about. I am going to write some thoughts tonight on what I see coming and stressing some things I see... But, here are those emails I have gotten that I enjoyed reading... Ref - I've been out of DMEC and GOCA ...Matt, RE: Lynn Goodman's Wednesday 28 July post on brainstorming new "hot sectors" and the future and your response; I too think it a great idea and I am as preoccupied with that question as some people are with balance sheets. I doubt that I am telling you anything new but a great place to look is over on the SI Gorilla and King thread and anything by George Gilder. (I am sending this in a PM since its your board and I wouldn't promote another thread on it. ) The G&K thread is more than stock talk, there are some very smart people who can often see the hot new stuff very clearly and talk about it intelligently and in understandable terms. I think a hot sector/hot idea corner would be a great idea for CFers. For example, years ago Gilder wrote about the coming clash in open access to the internet, e.g., AT&T vs. AOL etc. This emerging problem had technologies and companies associated with it that make for incredibly interesting and profitable investments. Similarly, the new wave of application service providers (ASPs) makes you wonder about companies like Citrix and GraphOn being the next in the gorilla/king category -- they make Microsoft look hard at the ASP issue. Finally, when I first signed on with the CF I mentioned that my main interest is in competitor analyses; this perspective is, imho, absolutely critical to making intelligent investment decisions. I "recommended" LEAP Wireless (LWIN) to you a couple of weeks ago because of the strategic competitive edge it holds. Another example which I have been meaning to get to you is Wind River Systems (WIND) a peculiar trading stock but an impressive market position now and in the future when it comes to embedded technolgy. I mention this because I view GOCA, ISLD, DMEC and a few others as never having a competitive edge either in technology or market positioning. This is not to say that they aren't profitable plays, aren't well managed, or aren't doing interesting things, it's just that I can't see the edge they have over others doing the same thing. All this I guess comes back to the search for the next "hot one", maybe we need a new company category --those with the EDGE to be the next 900 pound gorilla/king/ or even prince!!! Please don't take this as a criticism of you or the CF thread, I'm merely going semi-public with my own investment style; yours is great too, obviously. Enough blathering, I'll wait to hear about your hot sector approach and count me in to help however I can, I'm not as ebullient as Mr. Metals but I'll help in quiet ways. Cheers Gary Hill Email #2 - I agree. Here are some of my thoughts. The number of older americans is going to keep increasing with the babyboomers. Geriatrics related stocks will benefit. Drug companies, nursing homes, retirement living centers, retirement entertainment, geriatrics focused hospitals and clinics, etc. This is where I see great growth. Also, Latinos will soon make up the largest minority in the US and soon the minorities will be the minorities. Latinos have done exceptionally well at integrating into American society while retaining their cultural identity. They are leading trends right now. Companies focused on multi-lingual support and services, latino trends, fashions...these are great growth areas. Today on NPR there was alot of talk about this phenomenon and they equated the consumerism of the Latinos today to that of whites in the 50's, they are focused on keeping up with the Jones but they are now the Rodriguez's. Just some thoughts. Share with others and lmk what you think. : )
