The National Post reports in its Wednesday edition that the resurgence
in the cyclical/resource sector of the Toronto Stock Exchange is well
under way and rotation of these stocks should persist, says Eric Sprott,
president of the Toronto-based brokerage firm Sprott Securities Ltd. He
considers that the picture in North America has changed from one
where inflation was benign to one where it is escalating. Mr. Sprott is
recommending energy services companies. These are a play on the
rebound in oil prices and on the strength in natural gas prices. Sarah
Hughes, research assistant at Sprott, has chosen two special situations
for the column. Toronto-based Aastra Technologies Ltd. sells consumer
telephony products, such as caller identification adjuncts and a variety of
telephone sets. It sells to the majority of telecommunications companies
in North America as well to mass retailers. Ms. Hughes' earnings per
share estimates are 46 cents for 1999 and 62 cents for 2000.
Calgary-based Global Thermoelectric Inc. is developing a solid oxide
fuel cell that generates electricity and heat with no harmful emissions. In
mid-April, it announced a deal to develop an advanced fuel system for
Delphi Automotive Systems Corp.
