This Toronto-area company started as an engineering consulting firm in the 1970s and in the 1990s has transformed itself into a telephony company - and as of December 22, an e-commerce player as well. The company describes itself as follows: "Aastra Technologies Limited develops, manufactures and distributes telecommunications equipment. Aastra offers a full line of products ranging from Caller ID adjuncts to full-featured communications systems. Aastra sells to the majority of the telecommunications companies in North America. In the retail market, Aastra has the exclusive license to use the "BELL(r) Equipment - SONECOR" trademark for telephone sets and its products are distributed to the majority of mass retailers in North America. Based on financial results, the transformation has been very successful as in each of the quarterly reports this year, total sales have tripled, year over year. The company has turned the corner and is now profitable, earning 0.07 per share for the quarter ending Sept 30, with the Xmas season (traditionally, its strongest quarter) yet to come. In addition to its telco clients in the US and Canada, Aastra supplies Telmex through its Mexican joint venture and has supply contracts in Chile. In and of itself, its growth in sales and profitability makes Aastra worth a look. What makes it even more interesting however is the December 22, 1998 release in which it announced its participation in the Mondex smart card project with the Royal Bank of Canada as the supplier of a device that will turn a telephone into a mini-ATM for managing electronic cash. If the smart card really takes off (as many feel it inevitably will) and Aastra can take advantage of its current supply relationships with its many telco customers (and exclusive license to the use of the Bell name), earnings could rise very significantly.
