Welcome to the land of the Thuggies,Dacoits and Bandits???? Hi Satish: I have finished about 110 pages of 'Confessions of a Thug' so far and you know I am a slow reader, can't stand still for too long you know.<g> I am thoroughly fascinated with the book thus far,it gives a closer look at how the Thugs operated in the 1800. You are right about the lack of historical references but it does give sketchy references to various kingdoms, regions, life in a Durbar, the dancing girls of the Bahdurs, to various places etc as you know. It is perhaps because the author is not putting much into the book other than Amir Ali's narration of the events in his life and I am sure Air Ali couldn't care less about history and other releated matters, his main agneda was to narrate his story to the British guy for whatever reasons, perhaps he was hoping to save his neck from the gallows or to impress the Firanghee the very least. I find the following references Amir Ali made very informative and somewhat revealing about the various kingdsoms etc. 1)Hindostan (Wonder which kingdom or kingdoms he was referring to) 2)Scinida (MP,Gwalior perhaps?) 3)Dekhun (Deccan region or kingdoms? Karnataka, parts of Andrha Pradesh, even some parts of Kerala?) 4)Hindostani (Urdu perhaps?) 5)Feranghee? ( I thought it was a Star Trek invention, guess not) 6)Peshkar? (What exactly is a Peshkar,I remember my grandfather often mentioning 'peshkar' in his conversations when I was a kid, must be some sort of a governemnt employee,eh?) 7)Maharata (I am sure Ali was referring to Maharashtra) 8)Marwar (wonder which region he is referring to here) Looks like the center of operation was Madhya Pradesh, UP,Rajasthan(? some reference to Rajputs) and then when the season started they work their way to Maharashtra,Hyderabad, the 'Dekhun' etc etc. Wonder whether the modern day 'dacoits' in UP and Madhya Pradesh (particularly Chambal valley etc) are progenies of these Thuggies?
