Centura's RDM/Vx Chosen As Embedded Database For New Internet-Enabled Set-Top Boxes

The RDM/Vx design win strengthens Centura's position as leading vendor of database management technology for intelligent Internet devices and embedded systems

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 28, 1999-- In a design win reinforcing Centura Software's (NASDAQ:CNTR - news) leading position in data management for intelligent Internet devices and embedded systems, Centura's Raima Database Manager for VxWorks (RDM/Vx) has been chosen as the embedded database for a new generation of intelligent set-top boxes to be used in interactive television services. Hughes Network Systems Inc., developer of the new RDM/Vx-based set-top boxes, says the Centura database will play an important role in an embedded Internet application within the device that allows end-users to manage the dazzling array of choices made possible by the convergence of television, broadband, and the World Wide Web.

''Centura's database was chosen as the embedded database for our set-top boxes because of its efficiency, flexibility, and small footprint,'' said Dick Armstrong, vice president of broadcast products and services for Hughes Network Systems.

''The features planned for our new product, along with the large volume of information to be managed, required a high-performance data management tool. RDM/Vx cut our time-to-market by providing an embedded database that readily met this need,'' Armstrong added.

Hughes Network Systems' Internet-enabled RDM/Vx-based set-top boxes will be used to access services offered by America Online's AOLTV and Hughes Electronics' DIRECTV® service. (For information on the Hughes/AOL strategic alliance go to www.hns.com ) DIRECTV is the nation's leading digital television entertainment service with more than 7 million customers, including customers subscribing to the recently acquired PRIMESTAR medium-power direct broadcast satellite service. Within Hughes Network Systems' new Internet-enabled set-top boxes, RDM/Vx will serve as the basis for a content-rich, interactive programming guide.

A world leader in satellite products and network systems for more than 25 years, HNS is the second-largest manufacturer of DIRECTV digital satellite systems and the provider of the award-winning DirecPC satellite Internet service. In addition, HNS is the global market leader in VSATs and has shipped more than 300,000 terminals. Headquartered in Germantown, MD, near Washington, DC, the company has sales and support offices worldwide. HNS offers communications network solutions that include a complete line of integrated satellite and enterprise networking products encompassing VSATs, frame relay, and fixed and mobile wireless networks.

The adoption of RDM/Vx in Hughes Network Systems' Internet-enabled set-top boxes also highlights the successful partnership of Centura and Wind River Systems. Together they are meeting a growing demand for a total development solution for an emerging class of ''smarter'' devices in fields as diverse as telecommunications, consumer devices and industrial automation.

James,

Does this mean that Microsoft is planning to invest billions into GM, Ford, Dailmer, Toyata, and Nissan? Even the great Microsoft will run out of money if it needs to give everyone 5 Billion dollars to make its CE as the standard. :)

If I remember correctly, WRS has a joint venture with Nissan that's working on an automobile OS platform.

Thank you for the article.

Regards,

Khan
