Today's beta site problem:

I'm using an old laptop today Win 95, AOL 4.0 atop IE 3.02

I cannot log onto the beta site. I get a javascript runtime error when I try to logon:

[Line: 139] 'p_username' is not an object

WHY close the Real SI? It must be obvious that a LOT of users, especially the long-timers, strongly prefer it. It can't be expensive to keep it open.
How about thread history? Will long threads be present on toto? Will the search utility not forget sh*t at 120 days? I asked once long ago; no answer.
I gotta admit that I'm already nostalgic for the Real SI that was run by straight shooters who had time for the little guy.

I formally request that the Real SI be left open, perhaps as a Coffee Shop reservation. I can tolerate the Fake SI on the stock/trade threads. But the Coffee Shop is home, don't bulldoze it.

Brad, the "Petition To Keep the Real SI" is the Number #l Hot Topic today. It is miles ahead of the "competition."

But it fell down the Orwellian Memory Hole on the Beta version. It does not appear on the Beta version's Hot Topics list at all. None of the "hot" Coffee Shop threads do.

Who decided to limit the "hot topics" to stock threads?

And isn't the future of SI as important as the future of some dinky little non-reporting bulletin board stock??!!

Jeff, it is beginning to look like real censorship now.

First of all, I apologize for calling you "Brad" rather than "Jeff" in my last post. As you recall, in that post I asked why the Petition to Keep the Real SI thread was not on the Beta site's Hot List, even though it was No. 1 on the Classic site's Hot List.

Message 10739519

Since other "hot" Coffee Shop threads were also not listed on the Beta site's Hot List, I assumed the Petition thread had been excluded only because somebody somewhere had made the decision that only stock threads would be permitted onto the Hot List. Here are several more posts questioning that decision:

But then I saw this post, which reveals that the Petition thread is the only "hot" thread missing from the Hot List that Go2Net posts on its own home page:

Message 10740974

Of course, we could say that what Go2Net does on its own home territory is its own business. And the Petition Thread admittedly does not do much for its image.

But look at this. A supportive thread -- the Petition Forum -- was launched in the IPO forum, which, technically, makes it a "stock thread." Again, it's on the Classic site's Hot List -- but not on Beta's.

Message 10745151

As I noted, this comes perilously close to censorship. What is really up?

And finally, a completely different question. I should like to know what has happened to the Clubhouses. They too have disappeared from the Beta version. I posted Bryan B. about this, but no response so far.

Thanks for your attention.

Hey Jeff, you never responded to these posts of mine about an Ignore feature in the new SI:

127.0.0.1:3456/SI/~wsapi/investor/reply-10479814

127.0.0.1:3456/SI/~wsapi/investor/reply-10480362

You said you would:

127.0.0.1:3456/SI/~wsapi/investor/reply-10481265

But you haven't.

127.0.0.1:3456/SI/~wsapi/investor/reply-10484902

In the above post I even apologized for maybe coming on a bit harsh, but didn't back away from any of the content. I hope you didn't take that to mean you were off the hook. I'm still waiting for your reply.

I find it disconcerting to see/jump over "who wrote" at the top of each post. There's time involved to jump from blue to black to the blue post number, but even if the words were all one color, it is something that has to be ignored millions of times, and it is annoying. Personally, I don't care if someone dictated a response, and we all know the number in parentheses is not a poster's ID.

The overall color scheme of the beta is too cool, compared to the warmer tones of SI Classic. The Classic use of orange and italics, and better use of bolding are the big differences. The beta feels too much like Yahoo!
