I find the following statement very confusing. Can someone explain how the shares can be split in Canada on August 13 when the stock dividend is made to shareholders of record on August 17th.

The split will take effect Aug. 17 and will be the company's first since January, 1998, when shares split two for one.

Trading will reflect the latest split as of Aug. 13 in Canada and Aug. 20 in the United States.

Here is the same confusing statement:

Nortel plans to begin trading its common stock on a post-dividend basis on August 13 in Canada and on August 20 in New York and London. Each holder who holds a common share on August 17 will get another one.
