Intermedia is one of a growing number of telecomm/data comm/ Internet companies that defies traditional classification.

They started out as an alternative fiber access provider in Florida, and then became a CLEC, I believe (Tampa, Orlando), then moved into inter-state frame relay, then regional long distance. At one point they acquired Digex to add the necessary component to their mix to make them a full fledged bona fide 'net backbone stock. Now they are spinning off Digex. This is a highly curious move on their part, IMO.
