LOUISVILLE, Colo., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- NagraVision, a global leader in providing highly secure Conditional Access Systems to the Satellite, Cable, MMDS and Data Broadcast industries, today announced the successful interoperability testing utilizing a prototype point of deployment module (POD). The OpenCable (http://www.opencable.com ) Interoperability testing sponsored by CableLabs, was designed to provide vendors with a venue for interoperability demonstrations, which are proof-of-concept activities for enabling technologies such as the POD Module, HDNI, and OpenCable network interfaces. Participating vendors were provided with published admission criteria relating to product readiness, vendors with prototype, or actual product to test, and were invited to send engineers to CableLabs along with the equipment to be tested and to use CableLabs facilities both to validate the test plan and to facilitate actual multi-vendor interoperability of OpenCable Devices.

NagraVision and SCM Microsystems (Nasdaq: SCMM) worked closely to develop the POD module to meet the requirements of the interoperability testing which included companies such as General Instruments, Mindport, NDS, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung and Scientific Atlanta. "We were able to demonstrate seamless operation in multi-vendor conditional access test environment using Divicom Head End equipment to stream multiple vendor's CAS data over a single network utilizing an interchangeable Point of Deployment Module. This is a major step toward our goal of achieving a truly open systems and CA environment in the United States cable market. Open Conditional Access can give operators leverage, stimulates competition and innovation and ultimately expand the cable business by providing customers with real choice and better value," said Alan Guggenheim, NagraVision's Senior Vice President of Business Development.

In 1997, CableLabs and its members established "OpenCable" a project aimed at obtaining a new generation of set-top boxes that are interoperable. Based on point of deployment modules (PODs), these new devices will enable a new range of interactive services to be provided to cable customers. The open specifications project is patterned after the industry's successful Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) process that continues within CableLabs.
