If the Real SI were to go away, would you put up with it or would you walk?

I can't say I'd walk immediately, but I have a tendancy to not hang around something I don't like.

Lather, you have cast a fairly wide net in your questions. Perhaps I will go even further afield in responding.

1. My posting habits have already changed due to several changes I will try to outline here.

2. I have met several people on SI with whom I will stay in touch no matter what future course SI takes. Such interactions might be on SI or might take place outside SI. Somewhat that depends on what my friends think as well as what I think.

3. Some of the changes that have caused me to change my posting habits are under SI's control and some are beyond SI's control.

4. I think mostly outside SI control is the proliferation of lawsuits related to message board posting. I didn't like the stance that SI took in saying they might or might not notify posters for whom they had responded to subpoenas. However the lawsuit phenomenon is certainly beyond SI's control. This phenomenon has chilled serious hard hitting posting by many posters that I consider to be the heart or core of SI. I know that I am willing to make far fewer hard hitting posts. It has chilled my interest in vigorously joining the
FBNA efforts, although I have admired their work.

5. I am not sure how much blame should be laid at the feet of SI related to the pump and dump character of much of SI. The top posters on the hotlist are of this character that I don't like.

6. The Datek link was important to me. It impacted the quality of the relationship between SI management and several of my friends on SI that I believe are significant to the heart and soul of what made SI good. I find that the ethos of SI is a creation both of the Dryers and of a self governing group of people that put their best efforts forward to make SI a positive community. Josef Svejk and Henry Volquardsen are such posters. Josef started the History of SI Thread and tirelessly helped to make SI a better place. In some ways he became the interface between posters and management. Henry started the Post Grubber's thread the SI'ers in .Wav land and many important threads related to Derivatives, Currencies, etc. Things like setting the rules about Post Grubbing may seem silly to some, but I believe are important to the fabric of SI life. I remember Henry telling me that grubs had to be on topic on stock thread, while anything goes on Coffee Shop threads. The same group of posters, expanding out from the group I am touching on is quite active in policing Spammers and driving paid touts out of SI. The Datek link broke in many ways the partnership of building a community in cooperation between management and posters. It was going to happen and it happened. Period.

7. I don't like the idea of SI using cookies.

8. In summary, I think SI has declined significantly. If the Beta took over and Classic was gone, it would be another blow to the quality of the experience. I might not be gone totally, and that would in part depend on my friends' ideas and wishes. But I would be even less enthusiastic.

I will definitely spend much less time on SI if they force that beta thing on me.

lather, more food for thought...

how many url's are you seeing that show people are using beta?

"beta.siliconinvestor.com "

i see very few links posted that way. It might be only true in my circles though. I see more of the oldest "exchange2000" links than I do "beta" links. The most common by a huge margin are "talk.techstocks.com" links.

Someone should start tracking the posting rate of SI - number of posts per day on an seasonally adjusted basis - and determine objectively whether the beta version does indeed lose its grip on posters. I am sure Go2Net has such numbers, but I doubt they would share with the public unless it's favorable to their cause.

Since you are a scientist, how about volunteering this (highly meritorious) task? <g>

We would help in anyway we can, of course.

Lather, I personally don't care for the idea of converting the Coffee Shop into a reservation. Separate but unequal facilities. Uh-uh. I would say that at least half of all posters post both on the "stock threads" and the "coffee shop" threads. And there often is real overlap. Who wants to go to one site to post on one thread, and to another site to post on another thread? Too complicated, IMO, and segregation is never a good thing.
