I am SO in agreement with you, Joan. I grew up in Virginia where there is a very strong fraternity system in many of the Universities. W&L in my home town was all-male at the time, and drinking was heavy. High school boys would go in ( my brother was one of these) to the frats and be given free beer. I have had dates (when I was older) who passed out cold and left me hitching rides home. ANd then there is always an alcohol-related accident or death every year.

Dan was a Sigma Chi for two years and then he dropped because he just couldn't buy into that whole culture any longer. I'm glad Rice doesn't have frats. I'm surprised that MIT has them!

That said- what took them so long to decide to do this, and it's ludicrous.

Since it's a private university, it would basically be a contract case. What did the contract between Yoo and the university say, what did the catalog say, etc. Then there is the secondary question whether the contract was conscionable. I would argue that even if the contract said that diplomas could be revoked for prior disciplinary actions, is it conscionable to do so? But I assume the University must think they have at least some legal ground for doing this, since he had a lawyer with him at the hearing and I accume the University will have taken legal advice before proceeding.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
