Too Bad Microworkz did not have their act together. The PC I was working on for a friend only had a very poor modem. We never bothered to try to contact Microworkz. It was easier to fix it ourselves. Just install a good modem. Everything else was OK. He did have at least a 30 day wait for delivery of the PC.
When we turned on the PC, it offered the option of signing up for Earthlink. That procedure went fine and he has a free Earthlink account today. But the crappy modem kept cutting him off. We found out later that the Lucent modem was not really compatible with the Cyrix chip in the PC. We actually found a web page on the net that admitted the modem was having problems. But apparently Microworkz was shipping the cheap crappy modems by the thousands. If everybody had as much of a problem as we did, no wonder the whole deal collapsed.
Sounds like very poor management at Microworkz. They were shipping a PC that had problems and they just kept building and shipping them.
They never verified that the Lucent modem and Cyrix chip would work together without problems. It was a known problem and was posted on the Lucent web site.
The PC is now working fine and he is using Earthlink service. He has not had to contact Earthlink about anything. But probably most new users of the Webzter PC had problems and Earthlink probably received lots of calls about cut-offs. I had enough experience to know what was wrong and fix it. In other cases, it probably was a disaster for the buyer of the PC and Earthlink.
If Microworkz company fails, they can blame themselves.
