Chaz.. Regarding JDSU, I have been struggeling with the future of this one too. Business is very good, but I just can't get a handle on its ability to dominate by virtue if IPR. I do recall that when Uniphase was formed they gathered bundles of IPR and technology from several other Co's that had IPR but not enough to justify further corp commitments in this area.
As a supplier of components for other manufacturers, they pretty much have to tailor their directions to the desires of their industrial customers. This, I suppose, means that they could never be a true gorilla. On the other hand, It it may just be that that it is not execution, but unchallengable IPR that makes them a hands down perpetual king in this area. They may have patented an essential part of their customers' products--thus be locked in a 17 year marriage with customers.
