just because a company made a few errors in its past, does not mean that
they will continue to do so.

I hope you're right. Just seems like this is not an exception. Here are some recent data points..

***********

techweb.com

the new Palm VII Connected Organizer, from
3Com's Palm Computing division, is both useful and easy to operate. Unfortunately,
the Palm VII's key innovation-wireless connectivity-is simply too costly for most
potential...

From the article: "...Aside from the gee-whiz wireless feature, the latest version of
the Palm marks a technological step backward: It's essentially a Palm III. It offers
neither the Palm IIIx's 4MB of memory (it's got 2MB), nor the Palm V's stylish
svelteness and rechargeable battery. At 5.25 by 3.25 by 0.75 inches and 6.7 ounces
with batteries, it's bigger and heavier than any other Palm-about twice as thick as the
Palm V, and about 3/4 of an inch longer (Palm V is 4.5 by 3.1 by 0.4 inches and 4
ounces). And battery life is about two or three weeks, compared with at least a
month for the Palm V...."

MORE boneheaded stuff.....

Eric states: Palm is a networking play. This is what the soul of the company is about. And you are going to
see this more and more in how we choose to position the company.

But our business
is really focused on the network, from the Palm all the way to the edge of the public
network, but not beyond that.
HUH??? So, it doesn't really matter how many trillions of dollars are spent there. ....there's big bucks there. What? "You can't compete against Nortel and Lucent," there is a presumption that we
want to compete with these people, and we don't.

So let me get this right. COMS business is the network. He doesn't want to compete against LU, NT, CSCO, ERICY, NOK, etc. even though they sell networking products...and he doesn't care that these companies will enjoy (in his words) trillions in investment dollars. What in the world does Eric think these behemouths will do with these dollars? What does Eric want to do - he wants to compete on the edge where there is little competition...well...except INTC, SUNW, MSFT, etc..

This one was priceless

Q. Cisco, Nortel, and others concentrate on the core of networking, and you operate outside the core. You're the next step to the user. Is that what makes the company attractive?

A. The talk of attractiveness as an acquisition candidate? I don't comment on rumors. I'm happy to explain our strategy, but I'm not going to feed the frenzy of rumors. Every Friday, there is a new one. If I had started to comment on the first one, then I would spend my time doing that and I couldn't run the company in the meantime.

Geez... he's not even answering the question, he's more woried about how to respond to the takeover rumors. Eric??? Sup dude???

And if this is not enough Eric decides he outwardly going to take on Microsoft.... COMS is in no position to kick that stone...

We are convinced that you need an environment that is optimized for handhelds and that environment is not Windows CE. Microsoft thinks that they have to make big strides in the direction of simplicity. Bill [Gates] talks about this a lot. Of course, he is a prisoner of architecture, the always-valued Windows look and feel. We are not a prisoner of the past, we did not build an OS for PCs, so we could take a clean slate and build something optimized for that.

COMS as an OS company? And Eric is "in Bill's face with it! Eric!!! You're in no position to be growing balls at this point!!!

I could go on but hopefully you can see why I'm not as enthusiastic as you appear to be.

Your last comment...
Companies don't take over other companies, unless they see merits.

True. But merits can be widely defined. It could be to gain market share (Intel?). It could be for brand extension (CSCO, NT, LU on the network edge, or MSFT or SUNW for the OS - NOT! hee hee). It could be for technology...but then COMS doesn't have anything unique.

You keep saying that COMS has recognition, reputation and critical mass. Guess what, COMS competition does too! Is COMS a market leader in any category?????...other than possibly the PALM which they bought from USRX????

Mehrdad....time to take off the rose colored glasses.
