It's a true story, but I'm too old to take the bet.

I decided this morning after thinking about it....running in a gym, hitting the hoops for a few hours each day....plus a review of how many aches and pains a person my age has. Gee, I used to sprain an ankle every year playing ball. Next time might be the one that does me in, last time I was 28 and it took 6 months or so before I was okay with it. I busted it up in a JayVee game against Princeton in 1969 or 1970 and had to quit College Ball because a year later it still wasn't "right".

the hell with that, I am 48 for God's sake.

This kid who was setting up the bet is strange, though. I tried to get him down a few times, asked him why he would bet against a guy like me who he has never even seen on a court.

I don't think he ever saw the other guy either. He just thought the 35 year old was very competitive. I grew up in a neighborhood near Newark, you put 12 K down on a bet with me in the picture and as competitive as that other guy may be, he better have a lot of bandages in his gym bag because I am not playing fair.

But the very concept of a kid trying to bet 12K on a pickup basketball game suggests to me this market is cooked. Cantor Fitz has 20-odd year old kids who have 12 large to bet on a street game. Of course, this kid was most likely from a street where people play fair.

Heck, I'll play fair for a hundred bucks or so. For some reason, I just cannot get it into my train of thought that I would ever give up 5 figures without a gun to my head.

Even a knife won't do it, it would have to be a loaded weapon.
