I'm not aware of any statistics - but there's a lot of buzz about GSM worldphones in Europe. Ericsson's first-generation model caused a splash and now Motorola's tri-mode entry is creating a lot of interest. Europeans going to America usually visit the major cities in the East and West Coasts and the tourists meccas in Florida. Not coincidentally, these are the areas of heaviest GSM coverage in USA. What I find interesting is the total lack of awareness of Iridium and Globalstar in Europe. They just aren't on the radar. The massive 180 million dollar Iridium ad campaign sank without a trace in Europe. Many mobile phone retailers have no idea what I'm talking about when I ask about satellite handset sales programs. I can't fathom the Globalstar sales projections in Western and Eastern Europe - there doesn't seem to be any buzz. How can they project sales when 99% of consumers aren't aware of either the brand or the product? A last minute ad push was a disaster for Iridium - you don't build a new product category with one month of color ads in Newsweek and Time. In contrast, many European and Asian GSM users are aware of models that operate in USA. I'm not sure about the obviousness of cdma2000 "surrounding" EDGE. As far as I know, AT&T, Voicestream, BellSouth and Pacific Bell are all going EDGE and/or W-CDMA. The combined subscriber base of these companies isn't small potatoes. There is no doubt that GSM and TDMA are merging, the first hybrid handsets are out next winter. GSM's data advantage over CDMA shows no signs of shrinking. Sprint's big national data debut seems to be mysteriously moved to 4Q 1999 - this must be third or fourth delay. Voicestream's current 180% subscriber growth is way above every single earlier estimate. They don't rely on Worldcom - Orange, Hutchison, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom and Mannesmann all could use more US presence. Motorola's new V-series will debut in Voicestream, way before AT&T or Sprint. VSTR looks set to be the only major mobile operator with digital V-series handsets in volume sales during Xmas. V3688 was the biggest high-end hit in Europe and Asia this summer, there's little doubt it will make an even bigger impact in Mot's home market. Tero
