I don't know source but I am sure they got information looking at the commission generating trading rooms like Barton was in. Once you go beyond their walls, you don't have data. No one is tracking how each Home centered Daytrader is doing. The rooms have the SEC and others watching over their shoudler. Nearly everyone of the articles addresses the rooms when they speak to daytrading.

Others have mentioned Daytrading has always been here. I submit only in futures. Daytrading stocks has only become what it is due to volatility in this Bull of all time and technology. Those that are doing it have been breaking new ground. None of the "name" experts in trading have ever recommended it. No one has written definitive books or articles on daytrading stocks.

Daytrading stocks is risky especially if one thinks that how fast you punch the keys leads to success. The stories on Barton differ, I heard the first firm stopped him from trading there after big losses (good), he went next door and lost about 100,000 in a month. Most who attempt to daytrade stocks would do better to buy lottery tickets.

Should it be held as an adventureous, acceptable profession or one that draws the "get rich quick" crowd? The case is still out. When we were kids, most wanted to play Pro ball, star in a movie, win a gold medal, make tons of money and etc., A very small number of the kids with dreams ever accomplished those things. Success in trading has the same odds and all those things require ability and work.
