Scott just spoke on CNBC talking about MAJC. Actually he didn't
go quite detail about what it all is. But he did mention it is
media processor for consumer market optimized for java/jini
applications. Set_top box etc would be primary market for this
chip. Sun will use community sourcing agreement to promote the
chip architecture to anyone in the semiconductor industry just
like Java/Jini agreements. Sun might end up selling chips but
it really wants to let other players to follow the route.
Actually this arrangement could be one of the major incentive
for it to be successful. For one, this consumer processor will
come out really cheap in order to be successful, and producing
cheap products are not the strongest strength of SUN and it may
not even make money at all. For two, if the consumer java processor
takes off, then the thin_client model would be accepted everywhere
and who is gonna benefit from heavy server side, everyone would
say SUN, right? And the third factor, the licensing fee for chip
design or intellectual properties will be at a premium, there are
several semiconductor companies like ARM, MIPS and RAMBUS doing
quite well in this sector. SUN might eventually create a tracking
stock for MAJC product and creats several billion dollar marketcap
company as well. In summary, MAJC seems to be a very creative design
and yet a very conservative business approach with virtually no
financial risk involved. Good Job!
