glass on silicon for
arrayed waveguide gratings used for WDM modulation/demodulation... for the currently emerging fixed wavelength routers...

Thanks, Exciton, for that rather more erudite and informative summary than I ever could have managed.
A question, I had thought that the fiber bragg gratings functioned in a manner that could be compared to "fixed wavelength routers", but you put these two components in distinct categories. If you don't mind, what is the difference?

Thanks and regards. Steven

Nice post Exciton - nice to get a little intellectual discourse back to the thread. Regarding your 'gut' - go with it.

There is no incentive for systems vendors to become more vertically integrated. Quite the opposite. Whether its the CMOS/silicon guys or the optical component makers, merchant producers offer the Nortels,LUs, Alcatels etc. a great value proposition. "You spend your time and money designing the killer boxes and company-specific ASICs and components, and we'll supply you with everything else in order to highly increase your time to market. Oh and by the way, we can produce it cheaper, better and faster than you can as well." I believe it is an absolute certainty that the outsourcing trend will continue.

This favors all the quality merchant houses for years to come.

When you --- or anyone else --- has time, would you look at this announcement from Ciena and explain how it affects current networks. Are there any particular products that will be replaced by putting fiber into the last mile?

biz.yahoo.com

The MultiWave EdgeDirector 500 supports a wide range of applications, including multi-service (voice, data, and digital private line) transport over fiber optic rings, DSLAM concentration for converting TDM and IP traffic to ATM for transport over backbone networks, ATM Service Access Multiplexing to adapt and concentrate voice, data, and private line services for delivery to an ATM switching system, and TDM grooming for transporting voice calls over core carrier networks.

Is this an example of putting intelligence at the edge versus the core?

Sorry to be unclear on this.
