The market may well not do what you expect. I've been trading stocks for about 30 years and while the last 15 years have seen some spectacular quick crashes, there are other likely scenarios.

In particular a long term bear market could develop, where the slow bleeding continues for many weeks or months and the market would never have the 40% losses this thread is expecting in a short term, just a 5% loss every week for a few months. Actually we may well be in the start of this phase as folks get out worried about Y2K problems and wanting to take their profits.

There WILL be money to be made, but it may be from a much lower base and take a longer time than most the investors are used to. There's no reason to believe that the rapid gyration of the market and particularily the internet stocks will continue in the next decade.

"There is still lots of dough to be made on the long side of these inet stocks."

I've got some bad news for you Sunshine -- a lot of us are sitting on the sidelines with no intention of buying these stocks until they are real bargains, say near their 52 week lows. Don't expect to be bailed out.

Hmmmm ... shorts have quieted down. Bellies full enough from the feeding frenzy?

Hope they've moved on to another board, so that we can get back to thoughtful discussion and evaluation of eBay's future, as well as the nets in general.

We all understand that shorting is a respectable, indeed necessary, part of the market. However, the kind of shorts that suddenly descended on this board are a special species. They are not simply betting on a market downturn. Lacking both ethics and conviction, once they place their bets they set out to engineer a a self-fulfilling prophecy by launching an all-out propaganda attack to drive a stock down. When they smell blood, they will use any tactic to scare out weak hands. With the advent of electronic trading, message boards have become their prime feeding grounds.

It's a hell of a way to try to make a living.

Anyway, the faithful here, even though we may be out of the stock now, know that eBay will rebound strongly in the last quarter. The only question in my mind is calling the bottom and knowing when to get back in. Hope we start seeing some discussion along these lines.

Good luck!
