It is a shame to see Alan left. In JavaOne, I have listened to his
speech, I got the impression of a very sharp executive. Guy like
that probably doesn't want to be a division president forever. And
probably SUN doesn't have a position for him as a first level
executive like Ed Zander or Bill Joy anyway. And Java or Jini
directions depend on Bill Joy or James Goslin more than Alan. So
probably it is a minor issue.

Anytime an executive who has the reputation and stature of someone like Alan Baratz leaves, it is a setback (just as Eric Schmidt's departure was). However, SUN seems to have a good senior management team with a second line, so it will probably not hurt the company longtime.
