Homestead Selects AboveNet to Provide Superior Bandwidth for Web Site Publishing

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 1999--AboveNet Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:ABOV - news), the architect of a global one-hop network that brings together high-bandwidth content sites, ISPs and Application Service Providers together in centralized co-location facilities, today announced that Homestead Technologies, Inc., the leader in self-service Web-based publishing for consumers, has joined AboveNet's San Jose Internet Service Exchange (ISX).

Homestead provides computer users of all skill levels with an easy, free and flexible way to build and maintain Web sites. By co-locating at AboveNet's facility, Homestead is ensuring that its fast growing numbers of users, and the visitors to their Homestead-built Web sites, have the scalable bandwidth needed for a positive Internet experience.

Homestead is a complete Web-based publishing platform that allows individuals, groups and small businesses to easily collaborate and create feature-rich Web sites without the expense of buying desktop software.

These Web sites, which may be hosted by Homestead, another Web hosting site, or the creator's ISP, allow real-world micro-communities of family, friends, co-workers and colleagues to communicate on the Web and share family photos, files, audio and video clips, and more.

Leading companies, such as Dell Computer Corporation, Deja.com, and Juno Online Services have entered into co-branding agreements with Homestead to offer their customers the opportunity to build Web sites for free using Homestead's drag-and-drop editor.

''AboveNet helps Homestead fulfill its mission to put self-created Web sites within the reach of every Web user,'' said Sam Schorr, Homestead vice president of operations. ''With AboveNet's high performance network, and superior connectivity, our Web site creators have a stable server environment for creating their Web site and accessing our rich tools.

''In addition, content on the Web sites hosted by Homestead will be immediately accessible, helping to insure that visitors to these sites will have a positive experience and keep coming back.''

''Homestead takes the mystery and expense out of having a Web site, and it simplifies the use of the Internet as a communications medium for families, schools, small businesses and associations,'' said Warren J. Kaplan, President and Chief Operating Officer at AboveNet.

''With AboveNet, Homestead Web sites -- created by new parents showing off baby pictures, professional groups posting seminar schedules, and others -- can be accessed fast and reliably.''

AboveNet's Global ''One-Hop'' Network

AboveNet's unique network model enables it to offer the best connectivity and network performance to its clients.

At each of AboveNet's ISXs, content and service providers connect to each other in a LAN environment and then directly connect to the rest of the Internet through an extensive network of more than 273 private and public peering agreements with all of the top ISPs and backbone providers worldwide.

This architecture reduces the multiple network hops information often takes to reach its final destination on the Internet, and allows AboveNet to keep the information on its network intact until it can be delivered as close as possible to its final destination. The resulting ''one-hop'' network is highly redundant and delivers superior network performance.

AboveNet further ensures the performance of its network by providing its clients access to its significant bandwidth, which currently totals over 18.2 Gbps -- the most bandwidth available on-demand at any co-location facility. AboveNet guarantees 100% headroom on its network so that its clients will have the bandwidth they need as they grow.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 1999-- Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. (NASDAQ:MFNX - news) announced the recent launch of intracity dark fiber(a) networks in the metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C., Chicago and Dallas. With the launch of its networks in these three metropolitan areas, Metromedia Fiber Network now provides dark fiber infrastructure in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Chicago and Dallas, five of the United States' 15 largest cities. ''We are pleased with the launch of Washington and Chicago, two markets that were part of our original plan, as well as Dallas, a newer addition to our market strategy. We continue to make progress in our current markets while at the same time expanding our vision to new markets in the US and into the international arena with the announcement of our entry into Canada and the addition of a number of major European cities as well as the build-out of an intercity ring throughout Germany.''

The Washington, D.C. Network
