AboveNet Communications provides outsourced Internet hosting and connectivity services (often dubbed "co-location" or "co-hosting") to companies that depend on the Web to do business. AboveNet combines fault-tolerant facilities in California and Virginia with direct Internet service provider (ISP)access to reduce the number of network connections,or hops, data must make as it is transmitted. Its 300 customers include Supernews (Web discussion and access services, 14% of sales), Liquid Audio (online music delivery), and Internet Gateway (a Canadian ISP). AboveNet markets its services through a direct sales
force and through partnerships with value-added resellers, system integrators, and Web hosting services.
