African Gemstones subsidiary to mine crystalline quartz deposit African Gemstones Ltd AGZ Shares issued 4,019,423 1999-08-03 close $0.53 Wednesday Aug 4 1999 Mr. Donald MacPhee reports Krystal Mining Ltd. a wholly owned subsidiary of the company in Zambia, has been granted a licence by the Ministry of Mines of Zambia to mine a high-purity crystalline quartz (rock crystal) deposit. The tenure of the licence is 10 years with a renewable option. The property is in the Kabwe rural district, Lusaka province, which is about 20 kilometres northwest of Lusaka City and has an excellent road connection to Lusaka. The size of the property is about four square kilometres. KML has undertaken certain prospecting work and the initial work program has been completed. Presently, high-purity quartz is being recovered from this general area and idiomorphic quartz crystals are embedded in the central part of the milky quartz vein(s). The crystal size is variable and the weight of each crystal ranges from 10 grams to in excess of three kilograms. The crystal growth is such that one-half of the crystal is clean with a milky bottom portion. High-purity crystalline quartz has a number of applications such as: the optical industry; high-quality glass; chandelier crystals; quartz watches, New Age crystals and the gemstone industry. In addition, it is also used in manufacturing support equipment in semiconductors and fibre optic industries and the latter constitutes the major consumers of high-purity granular quartz. During the second phase of the prospecting program, KML plans to undertake a systematic evaluation of the property with the objective of delineating additional quartz veins, to be followed by quantitative and qualitative analyses. Thereafter, the company will develop appropriate marketing methods targeting specific industries based on quality and purity. A preliminary chemical analysis carried out by two reputable laboratories, indicated very high purity. However, further chemical tests are required to identify suitable industrial applications. Management has determined to undertake this project as a complement to its existing amethyst mining operations.
