Hmmmmmm. An interesting idea about FAQs. Let me try this one out on y'all.

What if we did the following...

1. Start an SI Tutorial thread where all members could post questions and answers.

2. We could create a FAQ page which would essentially be a Table of Contents page that would link to the appropriate posts within the thread. We'd monitor the thread and add new elements to the FAQ page as necessary.

Come to think of it, the "answers" would not necessarily all need to be in one thread (although that'd be convenient). In fact, I'm sure that many technical questions have been asked and answered in several threads already.

In any case, how does the concept sound?

Bryan

On posts: Personally, as I think I said, I do favor a checkbox system that permits one to rate posts for oneself. But only for oneself.

Thanks for the links to the post rating discussions.

My proposal is more along the line of a post index. I am not interested in rating posts..ie this post is better than that post. I am interested in finding past posts. (The check box for off topic posts is interesting..but if posters are not supposed to post off topic...does SI indicate that one should not post off topic and then provide a methodology to do so??)

In addition to filing posts for one's personal use I would like..in some instances..the ability to make them public.

A good example is the Dream Machine thread. We discuss a lot of subjects related to computers..multimonitors..RAM..backup systems..harddrives..cases..operating systems..networks..and many more.

Without effecting the day to day posting on the thread..I would like to assemble past posts in folders. ie put the multimonitor posts in a multimonitor folder..harddrive posts in a harddrive folder..Operating System posts in an Operating System folder etc.

There is a wealth of information on multimonitors. Traders seem to want as many of them as they can get. If the multimonitor posts were collected in a multimonitor folder then it would make it easier for someone to catch up on the multimonitor posts. Reading a whole thread of 8000 posts before posting is too much to ask. Reading a folder full of multimonitor posts before posting is something many users would do.

Some threads find Clubhouses useful. Others do not. The same would be true for an indexing capability.

An example

I believe the concept could be developed in the message center. One could have a button somewhere in the post taking one to the message center..with some kind of thread specific option. Message filing in named folders with the option to make some public could be used for things other than indexes...the SI FAQ for example.

The message center could have a list of the thread index folders

Here is a topic list I created for the Dream Machine. Many posters found it useful at the time. I have not kept up with it and am asking SI for help doing something similar. I believe there are other threads that could benefit from a thread index.

If you click on one of the topics it takes you to a list of related posts. There is no rating what so ever.

If you click on one of the topics it takes you to a list of posts.

For example if you click on multimonitors it takes you to the multimonitor posts.

The index was a lot of work to maintain. It is not something I want to do all by myself. I had offers of help but without SIs help it ain't gonna happen.

So taking the concept one step further. It would be beneficial if some folders had options for access by more than one user. Perhaps anyone could add a post to an index catagory..but not have the ability to delete..would not want someone making mischief..deleting someone else's hard work.
