Zeuspaul -

First, I have to say I don't understand what you mean about "off-topic posts," still less about providing SI members with a "methodology" for making them. What does a checkbox have to do with off-topic posts???

I am not sure I understand the indexing idea, either. No, I should say I understand it; and, in itself it makes a lot of sense. What I don't understand is how SI can help maintain it. In order to maintain an index like that, somebody has to read through each post, and decide how/where to classify it. Maybe on the Dream Machine thread you all stick to the point, and always say something worth remembering. But I can't think of any other thread of which that is true. You're not expecting anyone on the SI staff to do that, right? You are thinking of some kind of technical/logistical assistance, right?

Why not just store the index in a Dream Machine Clubhouse? (The Grammar Thread archives "anthologies" of important posts on specific topics in its Clubhouse. The anthologies are much, much less comprehensive than an Index would be, but still, it's a similar idea.)

Zuespaul:

I've been thinking about your concept, and I'm wondering if some kind of Public Folder system might do the trick. In fact, I think you were suggesting as much.

You indicated that there shouldn't be a "delete" button because that could lead to mischief, but not having a "delete" could cause just as much, don't you think? For example, if you have a folder where anyone can file posts, what's to prevent someone from filing a bunch of crap in there - intentionally or even unintentionally, i.e. they might not think it's crap?

I could envision that these public folders might become widespread quickly, so it wouldn't be possible for us to monitor/maintain them.

So, what if we set it up in such a way that whoever started the public folder had some kind of "editorial control" as to what was listed and/or stayed in the folder. We'd provide some very simple mechanism for the "editor" to add/delete/rename sumitted posts. If you didn't like the way that someone was "managing" the folder, you could start your own.

Just some of my thoughts here.

Thanks,

Bryan
