"why buy NTOP except for the name they're trying to create...unless they can create a large enough active user base fast?"

Aren't they? Aren't all he Telcos, ISPs and Portal companies all trying to do this? One way to increase an "active user base" is to buy companies who have active user bases.
Jules

Steve, I will admit that you were initially hit with a lot of negativity on the board here. However, I continue to disagree with you about the value of NTOP. While the quality of PC to phone communications may leaves something to be desired in many cases, NTOP direct, phone to phone with the calls routed over the Internet has huge postential IMO. I have used NTOP direct and its quality is indistinguishable from regular telephone conversation.

Now you can argue that eventually such calls will be given away for free but I do not think so, although competition will certainly force prices down over time. Still I think that before too long the big boys will be routing such calls over the Internet and the easiest way for them to do that would be to simply buy NTOP for a couple of billion or to buy all of IDTC at a premium. Finally with coming improvements in sound quality, I think PC to PC voice chat to go along with instant messages will be big a service that ISPs will need to have. NTOP will be one of the leaders there as well.

by: target456 3128 of 3156
Is FON buying NTOP or its parent company IDTC?

Heard this on CNBC this afternoon.

I hope this is good for FON. Hope this will be good for all of us.

Sprint's buyout of IDTC or NTOP....
by: worldpower12 3130 of 3156
makes sense since that stock is undervalued. Its a better buy now than it was a month ago. I'm not sure how beneficial it would be though for Sprint. However, internet telephony is the wave of the future and NTOP is the best in this field.

Fon is buying IDTC the parent only.
by: fonexec 3132 of 3156
They will control NTOP through the parent.

They will invest a large sum with warrants on the balance. In addition they are getting IDT involved with their new wireless strategy. AOL is involved in the deal as well for bandwidth play.

Sprint is a logical buyer for IDTC
by: techno_trader 3134 of 3156
It makes sense. Given IDTC's great strategic relationships with AOL, Softbank, GE and distribution on Netscape, Yahoo, Geocities and in the future MSNBC, CNBC (I hope), FON would do well buy getting IDTC now.

I'll give you this much only. Sprint is about to introduce a wireless challenge to AT&T's flat rate plan. IDT will be deeply involved in this. In exchange FON will invest in the company and get warrants for more. AOL's involvement has to do with the ISP. Again, I won't go into detail but for what its worth AOL's ISP is a closed system. IDT's ISP is an open system. AOL desperately needs access to an open system and wireless fits into their broadband strategy as well.

Here is a little more. Spring desperately needs IDT's network to implement its telephony strategy. AOL desperately needs Sprint's for bandwidth.

Last hint. Call IDT's customer service department and just ask whoever answers the phone how many people they have hired for the new Sprint business in the last 2 weeks.

Interesting. I would love to know where you work.

I do know that something is up over. You seems to have some verifiable points. some of this stuff I have previously known about.

FWIW, I just called IDTC customer service at 1 800 771-7555
The gentleman that answered would not speak too much about the Sprint relationship. But he did confirm that they have hired a ton of new people in the last two weeks for Sprint and that something very big is up there.

Anyone else who wants to verify this better do so quick before they receive instructions to be more careful.

Steve,
Do you remember this part of my response to you, two weeks ago?

>"---" the little guys will either get bought". Yes we agree here. Eventually, I believe, IDT and NTOP will be bought out by a Telco (or another company). A company who wants to get into the LD market quickly and can not wait to duplicate all the infrastructure that IDT has built. For this type of company, IDTC and NTOP represents a very attractive takeover candidate. And I might add, it should be at a very attractive price for us shareholders. For me I want to make sure that I am an IDTC/NTOP shareholder when that day comes. But it is my opinion, come it must."<
Regards,
Jules
