Separately, Ford's vice president of research, Bill Powers, said at the University of Michigan conference that with more electronic features appearing in vehicles, future models will need more electrical power.

Electrical demand on board cars and trucks is growing at 4 percent annually, soon overtaxing the standard 14-volt system.

Powers proposed that the industry move over the next decade to dual 14-volt and a 42-volt electrical system that would safely provide enough power to all the futuristic features in vehicles. He said that the more powerful battery would increase fuel economy by taking the burden off the engine.
