You certainly may be right on the design issue. I really didn't understand the complexity involved in ALTIVEC. Maybe, that's why IBM
didn't embrace it. A bad decision??? However let me play devil's advocate. I think Motorola's stand alone Cu BEOL SRAMS are in .25um
technology (Can anyone confirm/deny this?) If so, .25um is a lot easier
than .18um. Also SRAMs require only 3 levels of metal while Athlon will likely require seven. Also, most SRAM designs I've seen don't fully test the BEOL groundrules as the processor will. Also, AMD said equal yields as Al SRAMs in .25um. They said they yielded K7 in .25um Cu BEOL. Did they say they yielded equally as well as .25um Al K7s. NO Why not? Because, maybe they didn't. Now extrapolate that to .18um. I caution this thread not to take the
processing issues lightly.
