Anybody you know? Thursday August 19 2:38 AM ET New Species Of Striped Rabbit Found In Asia LONDON (Reuters) - A new species of striped rabbit found in the mountain forests of Laos and Cambodia has been identified, British scientists said Wednesday. The furry, red bottomed creatures with black and brown stripes across their face and back resemble the endangered Sumatran striped rabbit, the only other known striped rabbit. Diana Bell, an expert on rabbits at the University of East Anglia's School of Biological Sciences, and colleagues, compared DNA from striped rabbits found in a Laos market with samples from 100-year-old museum specimens of the Sumatran rabbit. Bell said genetic differences suggest the two species may have diverged about 8 million years ago. ''This discovery is extremely exciting and underlines the biodiversity value of the mountain forests in Southeast Asia,'' Bell said. ''We now know that not one but two primitive species of striped rabbits with red bottoms may survive to at least the start of the millennium,'' she said in a statement. The research is reported in the latest issue of the science journal Nature. The Sumatran rabbit, is a critically endangered species, AND only 15 specimens of the animal were collected around the turn of the century. The last sighting of the creature was in 1998 by a team of researchers from the wildlife group Fauna and Flora International. Prior to that the rabbit had not been seen since 1916. Since the initial discovery of the new species the new type striped rabbits have been reported in the Annamite mountains of Vietnam.
