Ahhaha, In general I agree with your comments. However, in some fine details I disagree a bit:

1) It is not necessary for most investors completely losing hope to see a stock's bottom. AOL's investor weren't entirely pessimistic in 96 when the stock hit the bottom.
But I agree that the sentiment needs to be more pessimistic for ATHM if we want to see the bottom. It won't surprise me to see one morning it's at $20/share. But who cares I am in it for the long term, I may just buy more at that level.

2) It's not that easy as you said for NSCP to counter MSFT.
NSCP's browser business is in a beginning a risky business. They are unfortunate that MSFT woke up early to crush them. The reason AOL have today is MSFT's mistake. Because of MSFT's oversight, it allowed AOL to flourish without real competition. Had MSFT reduced MSN's price to nothing 3-4 years ago, AOL would have been hopeless. With tremendous cash position, if they want to screw up somebody, they can do it.

3) Now look at ATHM. Are there potential competitors like MSFT to detriment its business? No, AOL can't do it because ADSL is not going to take AOL there, it's losing technology. And ATHM's cable knowhow is not easy for AOL to pick up. MSFT is already an ATT/ATHM ally. The fact is there is not a competitor, although a lot of inept ones.
