Here's the rest of what FEMA says about water usage under "emergency" conditions [for those too lazy to click on a link] ...

A normally active person needs to drink at least two quarts of water each day.

... Hot environments can double that amount.

... Children, nursing mothers and ill people will need even more.

... You will also need water for food preparation and hygiene.

Store a total of at least one gallon per person , per day. You should store at least a two - week supply of water for each member of your family.

Don't you find it interesting that FEMA recommends storing 2-weeks worth of water - yet government tells us to only stockpile 3-7 days worth of food?

I don't know about you, but only 2 quarts of water/day for food preparation and hygiene, sounds grossly inadequate to me.

At an absolute minimum, instead of at least 1 gallon/day/person - I'd go with 2 gallons/day/person. After all - how much does water cost anyway, when you get it from the tap?

Here's an EXCELLENT 4-page brochure that the California Governor's office has put out, "Y2K What2Do".

Gives a lot of good hints for minimal, basic preparation. I imagine in the ensuing months we'll see more brochures like this put out by state and local governments.
