Sean,
you wrote have a strange question to ask. I am wondering if it is illegal to 'invest' or shall I say sell short/buy puts on a stock/company that I have a disliking for.
what kind of a question is that of course it's not illegal to do that what possible law could you imagine that you would be breaking. that's like asking since i work for Wal-Mart would it be illegal to sell the stock short of course not I can do what ever I want with my money no matter what my view of the co. is positive or negative

FWIW

Sean,

I would keep emotions out of market trading no matter how you trade..... But to answer your question, I suppose the police won't be coming to your door for comitting a 'hate' trade... so, now we have to avoid fear, greed and hate when trading these markets... go figure.....

My Best Regards.

OT: Sean, re investment boycott, I think your plan might actually help the target company.

The idea of selling short is to sell high, and then buy low. Selling the stock when it's high might hurt it, but buying it if it's low later on could help it more.

The idea of buying puts is to be able to sell a stock for more than the market price, and again that would only help it.

I don't know why shorting is supposed to be nasty - I guess because you want the stock to go down, but wishing doesn't make it so, otherwise the market would go up forever <g>

Re legality, obviously you personally can buy and sell whatever you want, but I think it's illegal to publicly call for an investment boycott of a particular company. I bet you could get away with it though <ggg>
