I guess I'll opine to an audience of one.

Pomp,

You got an audience of two. I went out hiking early this morning and got rained on big time up north on the Mtn Loop Hwy. Returned home early. Hydro races tomorrow.

Re: Rambus status

If AMD really ships Athlons in quantity, Intel may find itself, for awhile, facing the first serious competition it has faced in a long time. Maintaining reasonable ASPs without ceding huge chunks of the high end market may require jettisoning rambus and its cost premium.

There are plenty of other customers for rambus, but if it's dropped for PC memory in favor of DDR and / or VC SDRAM, the primary volume user will be video games. Sony might then be in a position to demand lower prices and royalties, rambus would be in no postion to refuse.

A bleak and not particularly likely scenario, but one that is possible given the recent AMD news.

I'm a holder of rambus puts, so keep in mind that for me, these comments are wishful thinking (though that doesn't necessarily make them wrong)

Rambus is a stock that could easily go way up, but its price is largely determined by whether or not Intel thinks that it is in Intel's best interests to absorb the costs of competing in the marketplace using a more expensive technology that doesn't show much in the way of visible performance differences on most applications. But marketing can make such differences, or their lack, irrelevant, so rambus may do just great.

Regards,

Dan

Pomp,

I think the one big question affecting Rambus is "How much better does DRDRAM perform vs SDRAM?". We won't know the answer until Intel releases their performance results AND the chipset is released so that those results can be independently verified. Until then everyone is going to spin things according to their own bias.

As far as the PE goes that is a matter of perception. If the market perceives Rambus as having the potential to return fantastic earnings in the future the PE will go up. If not, it will go down. What PE should it have? Your guess is as good as mine, or the next guy. Once sales of PCs having Rambus Inside commence we will have a better idea of Rambus sales and what the PE should be. Until then it is a useless debate IMO.
