Dan,

Have you read Dell's white paper on Rambus yet?

dell.com

They have reached a conclusion much different than yours. Where are they going wrong?

Jim

The die size is only part of the increase, then you have the package which is $1.50 vs $.35, then the rimm cost more, xray is required to verify microBGA connections, testers are
$6M and requires at least two passes. Intel charges more for the motherboard and the system requires more special wind
tunnel type cooling adding more costs.
I do not think suppliers or Intel are ready to absorb the costs to get into this technology change. If Pc100 costs $100 for a 128Mbyte module then a RDRAM Rimm will cost at least $225 up to $350. We shall see in September. Then you have to add the system costs to that.
I hope customers can justify buying RDRAM based systems, we
need a good benchmark software to show the comparisions.
