glen, i don't think i do. whether a retailer is honest or not, he/she benefits from ignorance - even though they may not cause the ignorance. it is a fact, not a judgment on retailers.

if i'm buying a table and i knew the exact price and quality information of all retailers in the world, by fiat, margins will decrease. the net is an attempt to approximate this.

why would i pay $200 more for a table if i knew it was on sale 3 blocks down the road? if i didn't know that then i'd probably plunk down my money and be happy. if i'd save $200 and that store would lose $200.
