SGI is a very interesting possibility in many ways. They are where NOVL was two years ago. They're not ready for prime time and the stock is going down to the uptrend near 15 in coming months, but then depending on what they're doing, they could be a good low risk investment.

The SR partnership could blossom into a major revenue factor for them since there is quite a good synergy between the two companies. Neither company knows this yet, so it will take some imagination and forward looking management to harness the potential. The storage equipment is only the beginning. SGI creates graphic computers and SR knows how to transfer graphic scale throughput. The essence of graphic is optic. Somewhere in all of that there has to be something very exciting.

So far SR sees itself in the meta transfer market, but I see her in the local high intensity market. Consider a campus configuration which needs cheap high throughput with optical firmware based computers. Perhaps SGI can put the electro-optic interface on board and take it off card. The campus to a significant degree is already pulled to HFC or better, so the issue becomes miniaturizing SR transceiver on board. There is a market here for such added value. It is only a matter of economics whether it will fly now.
