MINOR PROBLEMS ARE LIKELY, BUT MAJOR SYSTEMS WILL FUNCTION By Howard Belasco - August 8, 1999 Let's shed some light despite dark forecasts from some quarters about what might happen when the year 2000 arrives and computer programs everywhere are challenged. The good news is that the lights will stay on. Power companies across the country have tested systems and say they will be ready for the new year. The public declarations of the Tennessee Valley Authority, Avista and other plants around the country, coupled with encouraging reports by the North American Electric Reliability Council and the Canadian Electricity Association, lend credence to the probability of power during the rollover. We are in August and by now we should have seen SOME signs of the Sturm und Drang that some people have been talking about, yet nothing major has emerged ... [Good examples follow.] Many of the Y2K problems that are surfacing can be dealt with through work arounds ... [Good examples follow.] [But, here's the kicker.] Indeed, the best way to do personal contingency plans for the coming of Y2K is to treat it as a potential unnatural disaster similar to an earthquake, tornado or blizzard. Prepare for two to four weeks of possible disruption. Find out what your local Red Cross and Salvation Army are doing so you can incorporate their preparations into your personal planning. Check out the Federal Emergency Management Administration web site at fema.gov . The description of our real basics comes to us from Susan Connery, a Lakeside, N.Y. resident who runs the Connery Native Skills and Wilderness School, and her survival advice: "Shelter, food, water, and fire are our needs. All the rest are wants." An excellent source for survival advice is Jack Brown's web site at northern-survival.com . Another is the National Crisis Response Institute. It has a Y2k Preparedness Brochure that is very helpful. NCRI's website is www.public.usit.net/jupiter. You also should check out backwoodshome.com .
